Admun FC6ing #3

Posted by Admun  Tags: linux, fedora
After some playing around, I reinstall FC6 again. Yes, I wipe it out again.

This time around the installation goes a bit smoothier, I just go through the default install with minimal setting changes. There are reports that incorrect kernel was installed, the same problem I encountered on the first attempt. This time the correct kernel was installed, but somehow the xen kernel still got installed..... at least this time the correct kernel is picked in grub. The trick seem to not customize package during install, I believed. This can be done in post-installation.

After installation, I reboot and connect via ethernet at first. The puplet seem working this time, and prompt for update. So, I updated.

I don't want to have graphical bootup, so I edit /etc/sysconfig/init to change that.

To get build-in wireless working, I enable Network Manager daemon, and remove its setting from network wizard. That's seem to work. I am yet able to get Neargear wg511 802.11g card working stable.....

After upgrade, I reboot and run pirut to install yumex and rest of packages I want from core and extra. Than, I added Livna, FreshRPM, Dries, DAG/RpmForge, and AtRPMs repositories. I set Livna to disabled and only used it in a profile from yumex so I can install only the needed package from it. AtRPMs also set disabled, I am just scare when I saw it wants to replace so many libaries....

The machine is still unstable and lockup sometimes when moving from desktop to desktop or some other window actions..... still investigating.

So, now I finally got the Wifi working. But for some reason it's not stable, it often unable to connect from Network Manager. It seem like that when I have 2 wireless interfaces that cause the problem (T30 only has 802.11b build-in, so I add a 802.11g card.....)

Also, I am still seeing some lockups from time to time.... a bit makes me wondering if I got bad RAM or some kind of h/w problem... sad

In general, the new version function better; gaim 2.0 beta window stays where they are each time I login. New toys like wallpaper applet, Instanbul works.

The Package Manager GUI kind of slow, but at less functioning. Switched to yumex. However, puplet seem not working yet, complaing baseurl not found.

I also shopped around and add other RPM repositories. Besides Fedora Extras, only Livna, FreshRPM, Dries, and AtRPMs still available for FC6. None the least, I am still able to install tons of stuff on my laptop, much more than I needed.

Admun FC6ing #1

I have been using FC5 for about 6 months now. Time to upgrade my IBM Thinkpad T30 with the new shiny FC6. (You can tell I am a upgrade freak smile )

The installation went without problem. I like that Fedora Extras can be selected during installation. So, I just install tons of stuff from it.

By default, the Xen enabling kernal is used. It's boot up very slowly, with all the Xen stuff loading. The text console is ugly under this kernel, it's fuzzy and screen size is somewhat incorrect. Anyway, I login and tried it a bit to see what's in it. The first thing I noticed is that cpufreq scaling didn't work in this kernel. Alway, that's it for Xen for me... maybe I will try it later.

So, I reboot into the -up kernel. Boot up is much faster. GNOME seem loading up alright. Network wizard show it detected both of the build-in ethernet and Intel 802.11b wireless. So, I start Network Manager to get my WLAN going. To my surprice, it DIDN'T work! It keeps asking for WEP key but failed to connect. I tried so many things and still no luck. What I saw on ifocnfig is tx is working (so it seems), but rx is 0.... weird. Search the forum and no one reporting this yet... So, I am struck with ethernet only right now. It's now work, for some reason the hardware seem to struck at a weird state that only reboot to XP fix it.

gaim 2.0 (beta) seems like an improvement, I like some design change, but not on others.... oh well.

laptop suspend seem to work now, but let's see this still work after I add the ATI X driver later....

Build-in sounds work out of the box, nothing to write home about.

The only major problem I found right now is the laptop lock up from time to time..... the whole display just freeze.... damn. It happens more often than I would like, even when compare to FC5.... I think it's a GNOME problem... and 2.16 should be better? NOT....

The adventure continues.

Are We Really Losting in the War Against Botnet?

Posted by Admun  Tags: security, botnet
I still remember back in March I read about that there are people actively hunting and shutting down botnets. Now some of the people believed they are losing the war..... wtf.

It is interesting to read about how sophisticate these botnets are. These networks behave almost like living organism, even wage war among each other. But on the other hand, when you realize what these creatures of binary do and its impact on our life, you hate it like your worse enemy.

Personally, I know my server has been hitted by spams, likely orginate from zombies in one of those botnets. But I am yet to spend time using honeypot or similar thing to see what else been hitting me. None the least, you can tell they are very systematic. One example is they are using Google Images search result to find sites to hit. I'd say it's very "impressive", assuming it's automated.

So, what we can do? I can think of so many way to curb the problem.....
- Make sure all PCs are patched
- Scan your PC for virus/malware/worm/bot regularly
- Hunt these infected PCs down and fix/isolute them until they are fixed
- Track the botnets and cut its C&C off
- Arrest, procecute those cyberc$#@!ks, regardless of nationality (or with a global effort)
- Have Microsoft fix their buggy software
- ISP to be more proactive on shutting down infested PCs
- More intelligent in the network with tools to lesson botnets and its evil traffic

It's all the old saying: Protect, Detect, React

So, why we still have such a big f%#$! mess? sad

Stop the bots

Admun2 update

Posted by Admun  Tags: msi
I guess I should have read this before I bought the MSI RS480M2-IL m/b. It seem like there are loads of problem with this board and AMD64 in general with some chipset.

I was fighting the same problems mentioned:
1) skew clock
2) can't reboot

Problem 1) seem to be kind of fixed in 2.6.17, and problem 2) is now fixed with a BIOS update (which also add support for X2)

However, I am seeing new problems:
1) IDE "busy" failure causing kernel panic. This happen sometimes during CD/DVD burning (using k3b) when varifying the disk, or when torrent checking files. I changed something on my server, and now it seem reboot whenever I get into this.
2) Lost interupts and some funny "APIC error on CPU0: 40(40)"

I am going to upgrade to FC6 when it comes out, and let's hope 2.4.18 is better.

p.s. I don't need to set "noapic" and "acpi=off" (ACPI is disabled in BIOS, I think) in kernel parameter and the clock is not skewing.....

Failure of Friendster

Posted by Admun  Tags: friendster, social network, web2.0
I still remember the day when I found friendster, thanks to Aug. It's all because of nice looking girl (BTW, which turn out later that not really her pic... I believed). smile

It's interested to read and noted that no matter what great idea you got, execution still the most important part. Failure to execute, plus aiming too high without realizing your problem cause darely.

I remember the time when the site not even coming up when I wait and wait, and it rumored switch away from java becasue of performance problem. I guess the solution come too late, and it indeeds failed to attract me back everyday.
